CONTRAFORMA and Nauris Kalinauskas Nauris Kalinauskas In 2000 he founded the design studio Contraforma. He holds the
position of Art Director.
Having experience in graphic design and being an architect, he has always been
interested in the simplicity and beauty of geometric forms. He finds inspiration in
working with sheet materials by taking a 2 dimensional material and turning it into
a 3D product. The simplicity of the material and the technology of shaping it
stimulates creativity and, in some ways, helps to keep the design focused on
simple, pure geometrical shapes and forms. His works stands out not only for
utility, function and aesthetics but also for the creative use of non traditional
materials for furniture design. "When you block out the trivial elements of your
environment and try to look at things from a different point of view, then you get
that amazing feeling of creativity, the sense of a desire to crystallize your
thoughts into a physical form", says Nauris.
His international success was probably the logical consequence of his philosophy
that the concept behind an initial idea should be brought to fruition in production.
Having participated in a number of international exhibitions his works are well
known worldwide. During his life he has received numerous awards including the
red dot award for the seating series entitled LOGO, - to be received in June
2007.
